His statement, made at a public gathering in Malgaon, intensified the ongoing political spat, with the BJP alleging that the opposition is insulting national sentiment. राष्ट्रवादीचे नेते जितेंद्र आव्हाड यांच्यापाठोपाठ काँग्रेसचे माजी आमदार असिफ शेख यांनीही 'वंदे मातरम्' न म्हणण्याबद्दल वादग्रस्त विधान केले आहे. "आम्ही संविधान मानणारे, 'वंदे मातरम्' म्हणणार नाही," असे असिफ शेख मालगाव येथील सभेत म्हणाले. या विधानामुळे भाजपने काँग्रेसवर तीव्र टीका केली आहे.
